5 Tips for a Stress-Free Family Photo Session with a Baby
This sweet family of three met me in a beautiful field outside of Bismarck for their family photos, and their little boy did such a great job. Sessions with babies are always a little unpredictable, and honestly, that's part of what makes them fun. Some of the best photos happen in the in-between moments.
If you're planning family photos with a baby, here are a few things that can make your session go a little smoother.
1. Plan Around Nap Time
A well-rested baby is usually a happier baby. If possible, schedule your session after a nap so they're ready to explore, smile, and snuggle.
2. Don't Stress About Looking at the Camera
Some of my favorite images are the ones where everyone is interacting naturally instead of looking straight at me. Cuddles, kisses, and playing together always photograph beautifully.
3. Bring a Favorite Toy
A small toy or comfort item can help if your little one needs a quick break. We can always tuck it away when it's time for photos.
4. Keep Expectations Simple
Babies are going to be babies. They might want to crawl, be held, or take a snack break—and that's completely okay. My goal is to capture your family as you are, not force perfect poses.
5. Trust the Process
Even if it feels like your little one isn't cooperating, I promise we're getting plenty of great moments. Sometimes the photos parents end up loving the most are the ones they never expected.
This family chose such a beautiful field near Bismarck for their session, and the golden evening light made it even better. It was the perfect setting to capture this season with their little boy.
